The series is set in the Big City, a city modeled after New York City. The story follows Blythe Baxter and her father as they move into a Big City apartment above the Littlest Pet Shop – a day-camp for pets of all kinds. Her real adventure begins when she discovers that she alone can miraculously understand and talk to all of the pets. Along the way, she and the pets go on several adventures together but when the pet shop is about to close due to a bigger pet shop driving it out of business, managed by the Biskit Twins. Having no choice, the pets turn to Blythe to help them save it from closing down.
Each episode is about twenty-two minutes in length. The series premiered on November 10, 2012 with the two-part special "Blythe's Big Adventure".[4] The first season concluded with the season finale "Summertime Blues" on April 27, 2013.[3] A second season had been ordered, consisting of 26 episodes.[5] A press release from Hub Network originally scheduled for the season to premiere sometime during the winter of 2013,[6] but was later moved back to November 2, 2013. The season premiered with the episodes "Missing Blythe" and "The Nest Hats Craze!", following a three-hour marathon of the series.[7] According to writer Roger Eschbacher, a third season with 26 episodes is in production.[8]

But the real adventure begins when Blythe discovers she can miraculously talk with the animals! The pets may be small, but their big personalities often lead to uproarious pop music-inspired song and dance sequences.
